Parent and Child

Course: Parent and Child

This is a 30 minute class.


Purpose:
To familiarize young children (from ages 6 months to about 3 years) to the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the Preschool Learn-to-Swim courses. It is not designed to teach children to survive in the water on their own.

Prerequisites:

  • No skill prerequisites.
  • Child must be at least 6 months old to enroll.
  • Parent or other caregiver must accompany each child into the water and participate in each class.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to ask for permission before entering the water.
  • Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner.
  • Feel comfortable in the water.
  • Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes completely.
  • Explore buoyancy on the front and back position.
  • Change body position in the water with support.
  • Learn and become familiar with songs.

Learn-to-swim Level 4: Stroke Improvement

Prerequisites 

Students must be able to consistently demonstrate the following skills to start in Level 4:

  • Demonstrate competency (specifically proper breathing and timing) of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Swim Front Crawl and Backstroke 25 yards and Swim Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke at least 15 yards
  • Tread water at least 60 seconds

Learning Objectives

  • Build on skills learned in Level 3
  • Continue to learn more advanced components of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Increase treading time
  • Submerging in various ways in deeper water (5-7ft location dependent)
  • Continue to increase swimming distances and add endurance
  • Introduction to flip turns

Skills to be Mastered in Order to Move to Level 4:

  • Demonstrate competency (specifically proper breathing and timing) of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Swim Front Crawl and Backstroke 50 yards and Swim Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke at least 25 yards
  • Tread water at least 60 seconds

Learn-to-swim Level 3: Stroke Development

 

Prerequisites

Students must be able to consistently demonstrate the following skills to start in Level 3:

  • Demonstrate basic competency of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Swim Front Crawl with rotary breathing and Backstroke about 15 yards
  • Tread water 30-60 seconds

Learning Objectives

  • Build on skills learned in Level 2
  • Learn more advanced components (breathing, timing,etc.) of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Increase treading time
  • Submerging in various ways in deeper water (5-7ft location dependent)
  • Continue to increase swimming distances and add endurance
  • Introduction to open turns

Skills to be Mastered in Order to Move to Level 4:

  • Demonstrate competency (specifically proper breathing and timing) of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Swim Front Crawl and Backstroke 25 yards and Swim Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke at least 15 yards
  • Tread water at least 60 seconds

Learn-to-swim Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills

Prerequisites

Students must be able to consistently demonstrate the following skills to start in Level 2:

  • Swim on front with face in the water, take a breath, continue swimming skills:(independently about 5 yards)

  • Roll over from front to back and float for 5-10 seconds (independently)

  • Swim on back using arms and/or legs (independently about 5 yards)

Learning Objectives

  • Build on basics learned in Preschool/Level 1
  • Learn basic components of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Introduction to treading
  • Introduction to deeper water (5-7ft location dependent)
  • Begin to increase swimming distances

Skills to be Mastered in Order to Move to Level 3:

  • Demonstrate basic competency of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Elementary Backstroke
  • Swim Front Crawl with rotary breathing and Backstroke about 15 yards
  • Tread water 30-60 seconds

Learn-to-swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

Prerequisites

None - Participants start at age 5 

Learning Objectives

  • How to enter and exit the water
  • Submerging under water
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Recover to vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back

Skills to be Mastered to Move to Level 2:

Student must be able to consistently demonstrate the following skills:

  • Swim on front with face in the water, take a breath, continue swimming (independently about 5 yards)
  • Roll over from front to back and float for 5-10 seconds (independently)
  • Swim on back using arms and/or legs (independently about 5 yards)
